At Iowa State, we have a robust research agenda in second language pronunciation. We investigate questions such as: What makes speech intelligible? What is the role of intonation in pronunciation teaching? How can pronunciation research inform pronunciation teaching, and vice versa?
Currently we are collaborating with Texas A&M on a project funded by two National Science Foundation grants. This project involves the development and testing of Golden Speaker Builder: a tool for language learners to listen to their own voice resynthesized to have a native-like accent.
The work of PROG has directly resulted in the creation of an international pronunciation conference, a peer-reviewed pronunciation journal, a second-language spoken corpus, and an assortment of other resources for teachers and researchers.
